Navigating the Norwood Scale: Understanding Male Pattern Baldness Stages with Charles Medical Group
Hair loss is a common concern for many men, and understanding the progression of male pattern baldness is crucial for effective treatment and management.
The Norwood Scale, developed by Dr. O’Tar Norwood in the 1970s, is a classification system that has become the standard for evaluating the stages of male pattern baldness.
Stage I:
The first stage is characterized by minimal hair loss and no significant recession of the hairline. At this stage, hair loss is virtually undetectable, and the hairline closely resembles that of an adolescent male.
Stage II:
As we move to stage II, there’s a slight recession of the hairline around the temples, often referred to as a mature hairline. This is still considered normal, but it marks the beginning of potential pattern baldness.
Stage III:
This stage is where clinical baldness starts to become more evident. There is a noticeable deepening of the recession at the temples, and it may be accompanied by the beginning of hair thinning on the crown, also known as vertex balding.
Stage III Vertex:
This sub-stage emphasizes hair loss at the top of the scalp (the vertex) while the frontal hairline recession remains at stage II.
Stage IV:
Hair recession is more severe in the frontotemporal areas and enlarging of the vertex. Despite the loss, there is still a solid band of hair across the top separating front and crown losses.
Stage V:
The areas of hair loss at the front and vertex are larger and start to merge. The band that separates them becomes narrower and sparser.
Stage VI:
The connection between the hair loss on the crown and the frontotemporal region disappears, with hair loss becoming more significant.
Stage VII:
The most advanced stage of hair loss, where the hair disappears across the top of the scalp, leaving a horseshoe pattern of hair around the sides and back of the head.
