Hair Restoration Recovery Timeline

What to Expect After Your Procedure

At Charles Medical Group, Dr. Glenn M. Charles and his team are committed to guiding you through every step of your hair restoration journey—including recovery. Healing times vary depending on the type of procedure or treatment you undergo. Below you’ll find a general overview of what to expect after each option offered in our practice.

Every patient heals differently, and Dr. Charles provides detailed aftercare instructions tailored to your procedure. In general, most patients return to normal activities within a few days for non-surgical options and within 1–2 weeks for surgical options. Long-term results—full growth and density—can take up to a year or more to fully develop, but the wait is worth it for natural, permanent restoration.

Surgical Procedures

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

  • Day 1–2: Some mild discomfort and tightness in the donor area; small bandages may be used.
  • Day 3–7: Sutures remain in place; most patients resume light daily activities within a few days.
  • Day 10–14: Sutures are removed; most redness and scabbing resolve.
  • 1 Month: Donor area is well-healed; transplanted hairs often shed (a normal part of the cycle).
  • 3–4 Months: New hair begins to grow.
  • 6–12 Months: Noticeable thickening and natural hairline appearance.
  • 12–18 Months: Full results.

Follicular Unit Excision (FUE, including WAW and SmartGraft®)

  • Day 1–2: Small dot-sized scabs in the donor area; minimal discomfort.
  • Day 3–5: Most patients return to work and normal activities.
  • Day 7–10: Scabs fall off naturally.
  • 1 Month: Donor area heals with no visible linear scar; transplanted hairs shed as part of the cycle.
  • 3–4 Months: New growth begins.
  • 6–12 Months: Progressive thickening.
  • 12–18 Months: Final results.

Implanter Pen Technique

Because grafts are placed with high precision, recovery is often faster:

  • Day 1–3: Mild redness and pinpoint scabbing.
  • Day 7–10: Visible healing; most scabs fall away.
  • 3–4 Months: Early regrowth.
  • 12 Months: Natural, dense results.

Beard & Eyebrow Transplants

  • Day 1–5: Redness, swelling, and tiny scabs around transplanted hairs.
  • Day 7–10: Most scabs shed; patients can return to work and daily routines.
  • 2–3 Months: Transplanted hairs may shed before new growth begins.
  • 4–6 Months: Noticeable new growth.
  • 9–12 Months: Final, natural appearance.
